The word destino has several
meanings. The most common English translation is destination: the end of a journey. But it also means fate, destiny. 

In 2014, the Briscoe acquired 562 stereoviews and cabinet cards of San Antonio which they wanted to highlight in an exhibition. I took this collection as a point of
departure for exploring the identity of the city in the late 19th century, as it has been revealed, hidden, or erased. One of the most striking aspects of the images is the diversity of people in them. Although these are historic photos, this is not a scholarly exhibition. My goal as Artist and Guest Curator was to take the photographic record and augment it with commentary and poetic or provocative juxtapositions (my own and those of scholars and the artists who performed during the run of the exhibition) which suggest possible interpretations and counter the notion of 'photo as truth.'

“The museum commissioned San Antonio artist Anne Wallace to curate the exhibition, and Destino reflects her practice of engaging the American West to examine ‘issues of representation, authenticity and myth.’

moves through 19th-century San Antonio so hypnotically that one
almost feels he or she can step into the picture and saunter through its

In the Spring of 2019,
I spent a day with the Samaritans, hiking the Buenos Aires National Wildlife
Refuge in the Sonoran desert, to cache water, food and
socks along remote migrant trails. In 2004, I had spent several days there on both sides of the border, putting out water and filming for my Artpace Residency and I wanted to go back.  When you leave water, you also carry out 'trash': items necessary for surviving the trek north but which disturb the sensitive desert environment. We picked up water bottles, "carpet shoes" (said to erase tracks), and clothing, which I washed and re-made into prayer flags; I
believe all of the things left behind by crossers - whose fates are unknown - are truly imbued with prayers.

I love to dance. Dancing is part of my personal journey into my body to release childhood trauma. I wondered if there was an intersection between that journey and the cultural journey to heal the violence of human rights violations and forced migration. I was filming couples dancing in neglected and abandoned architectural spaces in the rapidly changing urban core of San Antonio when I was awarded the Blue Star Contemporary residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, in Berlin. So I extended the project there, where I met a group of refugees from Syria who turned out to be a hip-hop crew. Remembering 'never leave a person in their trauma story,' I began asking the question, "Is the dance floor a space of healing personal and cultural trauma?" Invariably the answer was Yes, offered with an explanation of the significance for each person or community.

The dance floor is a contact point, a border. I don't ask your name, country, immigration status or story. I look into your eyes and put my hand on your shoulder. You don't know about my life. You put your hand on my waist and lead me across the floor.

Un Mundo Raro is the title of one of José Alfredo
Jiménez' greatest songs, which includes the line, 'when they ask about your
past, say you come from a strange world where you've never known love or
sorrow.' Most of this material was shot on the US/Mexico border during a series of trips from 2004 -
2008, with additional footage documenting the drug war taken from the web (noted
in the Credits). Propelled by an indie rock song (RadTimesXpress, Courtesy
of Drag City Records), fast paced scenes of high-stakes public life
explore several themes: family, immigration, ecology, economics, the brutality
of poverty and the drug trade. The relationship between image and sound is the
inverse of my 2004 film, El Otro Lado, in which human voice and nature recordings
carry the narrative while the border wall provides a relentless visual.

The extermination of the buffalo in the late 19th century and the suppression of wildfire have made native grasslands one of the most endangered habitats in the country. In Golden Age, I used off-the-shelf side roll irrigator wheels clad in custom reflective hardware to create a flickering effect across Hardberger Park's restored savanna, alluding to the natural phenomenon of fire on a prairie. As the grassland matures, the gold rings appear to hover just above the savanna where the sun and wind bounce light off the tops of the grasses, drawing the eye and the imagination out onto the land, reflecting its beauty and encouraging viewers to consider the course of our relationship to the natural world. The title refers to the color of the work but is also somewhat ironic. The earliest attested reference to a golden age is 6th century Greek poet Hesiod's description of a good and noble era, before the invention of the arts and private property, when the earth's abundance provided for all and people lived communally and in harmony with nature.&#38;nbsp;

Plants and animals reflecting the
natural history of the San Antonio River are engraved around the perimeter of the concrete bridge deck, in sandstone blocks along the bridge shoulders and in boulders nearby. The design, inspired by the "orientation views" often seen in Egyptian tomb reliefs and Mayan depictions of architecture, link the natural and built environments. The more deeply etched designs in the stonescollect water during rainstorms and floods, creating micro-pools for thirsty pollinators.

The Unofficial Story: Sidewalk Oral Histories

These recollections - gathered from dozens of interviews I
conducted over many months - evoke life before San Antonio's oldest neighborhood’s
close ties to downtown were broken and its communities dispersed by urban
renewal projects. Inspired by concrete makers’ marks - an indelible piece of labor history - I developed a technique for stamping longtime residents' stories into the sidewalks
along the streets where they grew up. As children on their way to school,
locals and tourists walk and read, they are reconnecting the past and present
of a changing city. Panels at the beginning and end of each street acknowledge
the contributors by name. 
&#38;nbsp;



For my residency at the John Michael Kohler Art
Center, I developed a movable typesetting system to make the stamping process faster
and more flexible, which enabled community volunteers to participate in laying
down those stories.
