The Once and Future River
Engraved concrete and sandstone
Pedestrian bridge at Mission Concepción, 80' long x 25' wide
San Antonio Riverwalk Mission Reach
City of San Antonio and San Antonio River Foundation Commission
2010
Plants and animals reflecting the natural history of the San Antonio River are engraved around the perimeter of the concrete bridge deck, in sandstone blocks along the bridge shoulders and in boulders nearby. The design, inspired by the "orientation views" often seen in Egyptian tomb reliefs and Mayan depictions of architecture, link the natural and built environments. The more deeply etched designs in the stonescollect water during rainstorms and floods, creating micro-pools for thirsty pollinators.
