My sidewalk projects address the relationships between communities, and between past and present, by incorporating diverse perspectives through the use of personal narrative. I interviewed residents of old neighborhoods and stamped their stories into the newly poured sidewalks along the streets where they grew up. The stories add layers of information and meaning without creating an additional object in the right-of-way. As children on their way to school, locals and tourists walk and read, they are reconnecting the past and present of a changing city. Because some contributors didn't want their names attached to their stories, panels at the beginning and end of the street acknowledge all of the participants. For my residency at the John Michael Kohler Art Center, I developed and fabricated a movable typesetting system to make the stamping process faster and more flexible.
