Plants and animals reflecting the natural history of the San Antonio River are engraved around the perimeter of the concrete bridge deck, in sandstone blocks along the bridge shouldesr and in boulders nearby. The design, inspired by the "orientation views" often seen in Egyptian tomb reliefs and Mayan depictions of architecture, link the natural and built environments. The more deeply etched designs in the sandstone collect water during rainstorms and floods, creating micro-pools for dragonflies, butterflies and other creatures to drink from.
